Phleger Estate
Preserving the Phleger Estate enables the protection of extraordinarily diverse Peninsula forest habitat. Majestic second-growth redwoods trace their ancestry to giants cleared in the mid-1800s. Coast live oak, serpentine grassland, and chaparral share the 1,252-acre estate with bobcat, deer, hawks, eagles, and newts.
In 1990, POST was given the opportunity to preserve the estate lands of Mary Elena Pheleger and her family, in partnership with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, Save the Redwoods League and local supporters. In 1994 with generous donor support POST raised $10.5 million, which was then matched with federal funds. In 1995 the private property became a public park. Today the land belongs to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and hikers and equestrians can enjoy its beauty in perpetuity.
