Whaler's Cove
Twenty-one miles south of Half Moon Bay lies Whaler's Cover, at Pigeon Point. This beautiful strip of California coastline offers spectacular views, a secluded beach, fascinating tide pools and rock formations, and endless opportunities for whale and bird watching. In 2001 POST removed and recycled a nine-unit motel adjacent to Pigeon Point Light Station, enabling the rebirth of the natural landscape.
POST purchased Whaler's Cove for $2.65 million. The site was transferred to California State Parks in February 2005. It provides a seating area called the Council Circle and a quarter mile section of the California Coastal Trail known as Mel's Lane.
The trail is named for former publisher of Sunset magazine and first Chairman of the California Commission, Mel Lane. Mel's name is synonymous with coastal land protection, not only as chairman of the California Coastal Commission but in his role as first chairman of the San Francisco Bay and Development Commission and as a board member of several conservation organizations, including POST. Hikers can walk Mel's Lane and sit at the Council Circle, enjoying beautiful views of the coast that Mel helped to protect.
