Annual lighting of original Fresnel lens at Pigeon Point Saturday, November 12, 2005
November 9, 2005
Please join POST at California State Park's 133rd anniversary celebration of the Pigeon Point Light Station and the annual lighting of the original 8,000-pound first order Fresnel lens. It's a magical moment when the lens is lit at the top of the 115-foot tall lighthouse, the tallest on the west coast.
On Saturday, November 12, 2005, POST will lead a tour for donors at 3:30 pm. The tour will include Whaler's Cove, the newly opened Mel's Lane, a portion of the California Coastal Trail, and the soon-to-be-built Council Circle. POST will have an information table in the Fog Signal Building with other non-profits and affiliated groups. California State Parks will have docent tours available throughout the day from 11:30 am until 4:30 pm. The lighting of the lighthouse will commence at 6:00 pm.
POST worked to permanently protect the lighthouse in conjunction with our public partner, California State Parks. We would like to celebrate this accomplishment as well as give POST donors a special tour of the recently opened Mel's Lane Trail at Whaler's Cove. The trail is named in honor of Mel Lane, the first chair of the California Coastal Commission, co-publisher of Sunset magazine and books and a founder of POST. Whaler's Cove was protected by POST in 2000 with the help of donors. In 2001, motel units that once stood on the site were removed. In February 2005, the property was transferred to California State Parks.
