Meet the Farmers and Ranchers: Cooper-Garrod Vineyards, Saratoga
Jan GarrodHow long have you been farming? Your family?
All my life. My family has been farming since 1893.
What do you farm?
We are wine growers. We also manage equestrian facilities. In addition, we grow hay and raise cattle.
How many acres do you farm total? What arrangements do you have with POST? (Conservation Easement, Lease, etc)
We have 120 acres in Saratoga, 30 of which are vineyards. We have 1,500 acres in Lassen County, 450 of which are under irrigation.
I sit on the POST Board of Directors and have followed in my father, Vince Garrod’s, footsteps.
What is your favorite aspect of farming?
Working with the land and understanding the landscapes and bringing the crops to full fruition.
What is the biggest challenge?
Keeping the farm a viable business with the challenges of agriculture versus suburban issues which include regulatory requirements.
Where do you distribute your wine?
Locally at a few retail spots, but most is sold out of the tasting room and through the wine club.
